The Rats and the Underworld

The Rats- (A short story about "Rats" and the "underwold" by Evelyn Rodriguez-Lallave)

 Part I

It was a dark and windy full moon night, or so the legend tells. 

 A group of rowdy teenagers were walking home from their neighbor's Halloween party while other young men, teenagers mostly, were drunk and driving around, acting fool and recklessly on the small roads of their small town. They weren’t afraid of many things then. And the whole town feared them.

 The town of Aguila, was somewhere deep in the countryside way off the outskirts of the Lobsters & Crabs’ City, in a remote Caribbean island. This small town was now literally a settlement for students from England and North American rich kids who were studying aboard supposedly to learn the Spanish language and culture and to learn something about agriculture and the old Spanish and Creole farming methods of the “Enchanted Island” as locals usually referred to the tiny island hidden in a vast ocean past the Bermuda Triangle, name Puerto Rico ( Rich Port), because it once was full of diamond, metals and gold.

Living in the warm and sunny Caribbean island with a full moon, many nights, specially during fall and winters time, appeared to these boys that it was just the perfect time to be careless and wild. It gave them a strong need or urge to have “fun” and disregard everything else. It seems like they did nothing but party and getting drunk almost every night. The wildest ones where two young red hair boys, Marco, and Tomas, and a free spirited Spanish girl named Lorena, who they met at their linguistics course, their first year there at the International College of Business & Commerce of Puerto Rico. They became close friends during, one thing they had in common was their dislike of Marco, Tomas, & Lorena, or the “Tree Amigos” as they called them.

The Halloween night was a bit cold, and darker and foggier than others times. It wasn’t so easy driving on such small roads, near rocky steep cliffs by the bluest waters they’ve ever seen.. The wild gang, as “the three amigos” called them, had just left a lit party when they were startled by noises coming from behind on the nearby trees. Then they all hear a loud shrieking sound, and there were loud steps near  by and all around them. Suddenly they hear someone’s terrifying scream  in the dark. 

It sounded like a female’s voice, because of its high feminine pitch. The gang wasn’t totally sure of what they heard. The group looked at each other and walked faster to their dorm. Later, one of the girls that had joined them fainted all of the sudden, while the others were asking to each other what had happened. 

Lorena told her friend to go check on their rivals to make sure they were ok. Not one of them were harm, together they all walked to where they heard the noise was coming from. A loud  horn froze them up in their steps. They  hurried to see where it came from and were a little terrified. There was a dead horse, a car crashed against a tree and there were also two unmoving bodies inside a convertible vehicle. They all got closer and could see the dead bodies. They had strange scratches in their faces and chest. You couldn't clearly see their faces with all the blood on them. It was clearly a horrible sight to witness. The young girl that has screamed before recognized the watch on the male's left arm and began to scream again this time was a very painful cry and then she fainted. It was her boyfriend's Rolex watch.

Marco and Thomas ran to pull the girl away from the car, right after that the car began to catch on fire. Thomas held the young lady named Tatianna while Marco and Lorena were tying to get hold of the police and 911. But before the firefighters got to their location and the police, the car and the two dead bodies inside were engulfed in flames. Only two rats that had jumped out of the burning car's trunk survived the fire. They were all in shock to see rats coming out of the burning car. How wasn’t that a nightmare? They all asked themselves…
